Coursework is completed primarily online, with required in-person hands-on training one day each week. The $2,500 fee covers tuition, lab fees, CPR certification, and NREMT testing fees.

You do not need a high school diploma, GED, driver's license, or background check to enroll. Those requirements apply only if you pursue employment with Jan-Care after completing the course.

Education

Course format

The EMT course is a 12-week hybrid program, with most coursework completed online. Students are required to attend in-person class one day each week, on either Sunday or Monday, for hands-on training.

Physical requirements

The EMT position is physically demanding and requires applicants to be able to safely perform essential job functions, including:

  • Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 125 pounds independently and 250 pounds with assistance, at a height of 33 inches, for a distance of 10 feet.
  • Bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, and walk on uneven surfaces while providing patient care.
  • Demonstrate sufficient manual dexterity and fine motor skills to perform necessary patient care procedures.
  • Hear, comprehend, and respond to spoken information from patients, coworkers, physicians, dispatchers, and others, as well as sounds commonly encountered at emergency scenes.
  • Verbally communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through telecommunications.
  • Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions and accurately document patient information through written or electronic means.
  • Meet the minimum vision requirements necessary to operate a motor vehicle in the State of West Virginia.
  • Safely perform patient care and ambulance operations in a variety of environments and conditions.
  • Inspect and maintain EMS equipment and assist with the cleaning and upkeep of ambulances and facilities.

Drug-free workplace

Jan-Care Ambulance maintains a drug-free workplace and requires employees to comply with its drug and alcohol policy.
Drug testing requirement. Enrollment in the Jan-Care EMT course is contingent upon successfully completing a drug screening. Applicants are subject to drug testing as part of the enrollment process. Additional drug testing may be required if the applicant is later selected for employment with Jan-Care.
